Binky's Alternate Reality

I write because I can. I write because I have these words in my head that just need to get out. I write because all I do is daydream - daydream alternate realities for characters and people that don't exist in this reality. And ideally, I want people to know these characters in my alternate reality. I want them to know what they're about, their hopes and dreams, their struggles and heartbreaks. Ideally, I want people to love these characters as much as I do. After all, I am a storyteller. All I want is just to tell the stories of these imaginary people in my head. Maybe in another reality, they're all real and I'm just here to tell their story.

Hi, my name is Binky. Welcome to my alternate reality.

Coming of Age

Coming soon

This book took about 11 days to write after it had been percolating in my mind for 4 years. It is a story of love, friendship, triumph and forgiveness - of oneself and each other.

Twenty six-year-old August, a genius in his own right, is not happy with his life. He’s feeling restless, isolated and incredibly lonely. The people closest to him, namely his sister, notices that there’s something wrong with him and suggests that he gets help. So he goes to see Anna, a psychiatrist who’s going through a bitter divorce, and the two soon finds themselves embroiled in an illicit affair. Feeling his life is spinning out of control, August starts to unravel until one day he finds himself standing on a ledge and wondering how the hell does he get himself in that situation in the first place.

After being sent to a psychiatric facility for his attempted suicide, August and Anna reconnect only to discover the consequences of their self-destructive relationship. Reeling from their affair, they both turn to the people closest to them to get the help they so desperately need and rebuild their lives with the help of the ones they love.

Coming of Age is a story of growing up, discovering yourself and finding your happiness in the face of mental illness and heartbreaking loss. It's a story of self-discovery, forgiveness, love and heartbreak, told in the points of view of three people who are all going through their own "coming of age".

Prologue

April 18, 2017

Have you ever found yourself some place, and you have no idea how you got there? Like, you suddenly realize you’re somewhere and you don’t know what got you there. You look around you and you wonder to yourself, “How did I get here?” and you are suddenly hyper aware of yourself and your surrounding. The sirens that you never pay attention to – because does anybody who live in a city like this ever pay attention to them? – are suddenly deafening, the city lights that never seem to bother you before are suddenly blinding, you keep looking at your shoes, asking them why they chose to take you to that particular spot that you find yourself in, and they refuse to give you an answer.

Chapter 1: What am I Becoming?

April 25, 2017

August

I hate being called a genius.

Probably because at first, it was meant as a compliment — a way to acknowledge my brilliant mind — but over the years, it has slowly morphed into a kind of sarcastic insult. Not because I’m actually an idiot or anything. It’s more because my co-workers thought it would be funny to sarcastically call me a “genius”, to imply that I’m anything but. I hate my co-workers and I know they probably hate me too. I am the youngest fourth-year associate in one of the most prestigious law firms in Manhattan. The partners love me. So yeah, of course they hate me. Lawyers are nothing if not petty.

But that’s not the only reason why I hate being called a genius.
